The World Health Organization’s Director-General, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, explains that the fears and anxieties caused by the coronavirus outbreak have affected the psychological state of many people.
Speaking at a news conference via video conference from the organisation’s headquarters in Geneva, Ghebreyesus said that the social networking gap created by the epidemic has badly affected the psyche of the many people.
He said that the psychological effects of the epidemic were affecting the daily lives of the people and places like care centres and psychiatric hospitals were badly affected.
He said that some psychiatric hospitals are getting used just for corona patients, which has led to a big increase within the difficulties already faced by the world .
Around one billion people worldwide suffer from mental disease . substance abuse kills three million people a year, and one person commits suicide every 40 seconds, he added.
Ghebreyesus warns that low- and middle-income countries also lack the resources to treat mental disease and drug addicts.
